The Importance of Medical Training: Tips for the Modern Day Prepper

This article is the first in the series of how hobbies and interest can help you gain knowledge and skill. While medical training is not necessarily a hobby; I thought it was too important to be left out. Some of us at one point or another have taken a basic CPR class by the American Heart Association and have gained at least some knowledge about how the heart works. While this knowledge is good, it does little to improve someone’s confidence in their skills because of the lack of experiential education. Education in first aid/first responder, EMT –Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic could not only save your life and others around you, but it can help you develop your confidence and skills in an emergency situation. Researchers in psychology and common sense tells us that self-confidence is one of the biggest factors in being able to be competent in your abilities to save a life.

One of the best ways you can find medical training is your local community college that offers EMT classes from basic all the way up to the paramedic level. Yes, these classes will take some money and time, but it is an investment in your knowledge and skill which will pay off in the long run. Another way to get a different kind of medical training is to enlist in a specialized program(s) such as the Wilderness Medical Training Center’s program that offer training of medicine in a wilderness environment where public access of 9-1-1 is not an option. I have personally completed their Wilderness First Responder Course (WFR) and not only was it informational and useful but it was fun! This is just another way you can be better prepared for emergency situations down the road and who knows, it might lead to an exciting career along the way.
